Kali seem to have challenged Lord Shiva in dance and lost because Lord Shiva lifted his left leg as a dance posture which Goddess kali could not do and accepted the defeat and settled in this temple in the same kali roopa along with her original incarnation Thillai Amman. The Goddess is also stationed inside the temple in a Kali roopam offering power to every devotee.
The Goddess is stationed there as Thillai amman like the Goddess in any Shiva temple. The temple is very small, but not the Goddess or her power. About a Kilo Meter walk from the northern gopuram, of the famous Nataraja temple in Chidambaram, the approach, the roads, surroundings are sort of OK.
